Save Sight Institute is a centre of the University of Sydney, located at Sydney Eye Hospital, 8 Macquarie St, Sydney, NSW, 2000.

The SSI Clinic Orthoptist works as a member of a team, reporting to the Clinic Manager and working with other clinic members to ensure the
efficient and effective delivery of orthoptic services at the Save Sight Institute Clinic. The position provides general orthoptic services, support for intravitreal injection and other clinics delivered collaboratively with the Sydney Eye Hospital.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor or Masters of Orthoptics
Member of the Orthoptic Board

KEY ACTIVITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Under the direction of the Clinic Manager provide high quality orthoptic services by

Ensuring the effective day to day running of clinical services by:
• Preparing the clinic for daily operations
• Ensure the clinic is tidy and equipment is shut down as required at the end of each day or that appropriate hand over is undertaken
• Undertake initial and follow up orthoptic assessments ensuring that appropriate, accurate testing is performed
• Assist with electrophysiology and ophthalmic testing and procedures as required
• Manage patients and patient flow through the clinic
• Arrange associated medical tests and appointments for patients as required
• Monitor and maintain ophthalmic consumables reordering as required to ensure continuity of supplies
• Following established protocols work with other team members to coordinate and conduct intravitreal injection clinics including:
• Setting up, preparing patients and assisting the clinician
• Sanitisation of equipment as per protocol
• Assisting with the PBS approval and authority process and providing a point of contact for Medicare and Pharmacy provider
• Monitor rosters and clinic schedules ensuring throughput and quality of service provision
• Liaise with the admin team for appointment reschedules, reminder call changes, cancellations and urgent additions to clinics, and
• Regarding prioritisation of patients with transport issues (community based patient transport, ambulance, families from long distance
etc.)

2. Ensure a strong patient service and education focus by:
• Engaging effectively with key personnel including:
• Communicating clearly and effectively across a broad patient base from babies and very young children to adults, the elderly and
those with visual disability
• Ensuring that patients have access to information about their condition and/or treatment and that queries and concerns are responded
to in a timely manner
• Conducting and/or participating in, patient information and education sessions
• Communicating clearly, effectively and confidently with clinicians, researchers and hospital personnel
• Providing support for and responding to clinicians requests and directions in a timely and professional manner
• Contributing to and working positively within the clinical team

3. Undertake other duties as directed
• Undertake other duties, including administration and front of house, as required to ensure professional, effective and efficient
implementation of SSI clinic activities and to support team members
• Assist the Clinic Manager with planning, rostering and development of future clinic activities and services
• Attend and contribute to regular clinic team meetings
• Actively participate in education and mentoring of students (orthoptic, medical), and other clinic staff
• Actively participate in Performance Management and Development process and maintain professional knowledge and skills
• Contribute to the development of a positive team culture engaging in information exchange and assisting when required
